The Discipline of Devotion

Week 3  |  No-Fail Disciplines

Situation

A man can be disciplined in mind.

He can be strong in body.

But without submission to God, his lukewarm faith will become an obstacle — not a foundation.

We were not created to operate independently from our Creator. Yet many men do exactly that. They claim their faith — but lead their homes, make decisions, and navigate stress on their own terms.

Convenience over discipline. Emotion over truth. Pride over obedience.

If your spirit does not stand firmly on solid ground, everything built on it will be a house of cards.

Reflection

For the first fifteen years of my faith, I believed in God but did not fully submit to Him. I acknowledged my faith, yet it was not my priority. I was disciplined in my fitness, focused in my career, and responsible in my leadership. However, I was still trying to control every aspect of my own life.

I did not read my Bible. I rarely went to church. I prayed when there was a need — and returned to living life on my own terms when my circumstances improved.

That is not true devotion. Faith without obedience is no faith at all.

I wanted God's protection without always accepting His authority. His blessing without embracing His correction. I asked Him to support my plans rather than surrender to His will.

It was not until I finally submitted that my life was transformed. Alignment in Him only occurs with intention. It is a decision — made daily — to place God first in every area of life.

Is your faith intentional — or only activated when life gets hard?

Are you submitting to God's authority — or asking Him to support your plans?

Critical Intel

Devotion is not a feeling. It is a discipline — built daily, held regardless of circumstance, and structured around intentional practice.

Discipline leads to obedience. Obedience leads to submission.

This week's Command Brief introduces The Devotion Cycle — a four-step framework for building the kind of spiritual discipline that holds up under pressure. It is not a checklist but a cycle that begins each day with intention, before the external pressures of the world can distract you.

The Devotion Cycle is how PIR3 runs in the Spirit domain. If you have not read Issue #000, find it at themission.beehiiv.com/p/pir3.

You do not wander into a strong relationship with God.

You build it — intentionally, consistently, without negotiating His word away.

Key Tasks

Mission — Submit and Start the Cycle

·       Before anything else happens tomorrow morning — pray. One minute. Identify five things you are grateful for. That is the start.

·       Open Scripture this week. Proverbs, a Gospel, or a daily devotional app. Once a day. No exceptions.

·       At the end of each day, ask yourself one honest question: What did I learn today — and how am I applying it?

Submission is not weakness. It is strength forged in obedience.

RESOURCES

The Case for Christ — Lee Strobel. A former investigative journalist and self-described atheist who set out to disprove the resurrection — and could not. Strobel examines the historical and evidential case for Christ with the same rigor he applied in the courtroom. For the man who has resisted faith on intellectual grounds, or the believer who wants to defend what he stands on, this is a great resource.

Looking Ahead

Next week, we will look outside of ourselves — into the Relationships domain and the discipline of presence. Taking what we have built the last few weeks and investing ourselves in the people closest to us.

This week's Command Brief unpacks The Devotion Cycle in full — a four-step framework for building spiritual discipline that holds under pressure, with specific guidance for every man regardless of where he is starting from. If this resonated — that is your next step.

AFTER ACTION REVIEW

Where has the absence of intentional devotion shown up in your life this week — and what is one thing you are committing to do differently tomorrow?

Stand firm.

— Charlie
