The Discipline of Adventure

Week 6  |  No-Fail Disciplines  |  Final Week

Situation

Men don’t plan to stop pursuing the things that bring them joy. Spending time with family and friends, engaging in hobbies, or going on vacations. It just happens.

A busy week becomes a busy month. The hobby, the trip, the challenge — pushed aside for something that seemed more urgent at the time.

One day, he looks up and realizes he’s exhausted and can’t remember the last time he felt alive.

When a man stops pursuing the things that bring him joy or challenge him, he becomes stagnant. Less grateful. Bored. Complacent.

Adventure is not a reward for when life slows down — because it never slows down. It is restoration, just like the Sabbath in our faith. Skip it long enough, and the man will lose touch with the purpose behind everything he is grinding for.

Reflection

At age 35, I was living away from my family, training Special Operations Forces on the East Coast. On the weekends, I started rucking the nearby trails — partly to stay in shape, partly to unplug.

During those rucks, an idea took shape and ultimately became crystal clear. I would re-enlist in the military after a ten-year break in service. I would attend Special Forces Assessment and Selection and earn the privilege of wearing the Green Beret.

That decision changed the trajectory of my life and my family's. It also came with a cost — months away, deployments, long separations. Every pursuit worth having has a cost. That cost must be assessed before you commit to the pursuit.

The adventure that changes your life rarely looks safe or stable from the outside.

What have you been putting off that you know would make you feel more alive?

What is the cost of continuing to wait?

Critical Intel

Imbalance does not remain confined to one neglected life domain. It spreads slowly across every area of life.

Adventure gives you back the mental whitespace to find balance — by reconnecting you with what makes you feel alive.

This week's Command Brief introduces The Adventure Model — a three-step framework for moving from idea to action, whether the pursuit is a two-week expedition or a Sunday afternoon on the motorcycle.

The Adventure Model is how PIR3 runs in the Adventure domain. If you have not read Issue #000, find it at themission.beehiiv.com/p/the-mission-1.

Stop surviving your days. Start living them.

Key Tasks

Mission — Choose Your Next Adventure

1. Write down every adventure, challenge, or hobby you have been putting off. Full brain dump. No editing — just write it down. Hard things, joyful things, things with your family, friends, or even by yourself.

2. Pick one. It doesn’t have to be the most impressive one, but the right one for this season of life. Set a date and hold yourself to it.

3. Tell one person what you are pursuing. Accountability is not weakness — it is how men follow through.

Plan it. Put a date to it. Tell someone about it. Then execute it.

RESOURCES

#Maxout — Ed Mylett. A direct challenge to stop living at a fraction of your capacity. Mylett pushes the reader to identify what is holding them back from a fully lived life and to close the gap between potential and pursuit. A fitting close to a series built on the same idea.

Looking Ahead

This closes the No-Fail Disciplines series. Six domains. Six frameworks. A foundation has been established — but the work is not finished. Phase II begins, going deeper into each domain and building toward pushing the limits of our Mission Focus.

This week's Command Brief unpacks The Adventure Model in full — Explore, Decide, and Initiate — and closes the series with a challenge to keep moving forward. If this series resonated — that is your next step. Subscribe below.

AFTER ACTION REVIEW

What is one adventure you have been putting off? Write it down. What would it take to put it on the calendar this month?

Stand firm.
